Several companies offer insurance – we can mention 3 that are currently used, and can provide a comparison as to what is available.

Co-insurance

Vetinsurance pays 90% of an approved claim.

Petplan will pay 80%of an approved claim unless the co-insurance has been reduced by, "Claims risk management" (see Below).

With Percare 80% or 90% coverage is available. If you choose the 90% coverage, you will pay higher rates and the coverage will reduce to 80% when your pet ages.

What Happens When You Start Making Claims?

Nothing. Vetinsurance is only concerned with the $20,000 coverage. If you needed to make a claim for $5,000 you would have $15,000 remaining. If by rare chance you happen to be a very unlucky pet owner that used the full $20,000 coverage, you would cancel your original plan and have the option to re-enroll your pet at the appropriate age category. This would give a new full coverage plan, but with some pre-existing conditions.

Petplan has a clause they refer to as " Claims Risk Management" in their policy terms and conditions (Form TC 2006) states, "Should you experience claims above a pre-determined threshold during a 24 month history reviewed, the percentage of the claim you are responsible for (co-insurance) in respect of future claims will increase.

Similar to auto insurance if you make claims your rates may increase. If your pet becomes seriously ill you will onlt have a lifetime limit of $3,000. Once you use the limit up, you no longer have coverage for that illness category. Even if you upgrade your plan, the limit with any illness category that has been used will remain the same.

What Happens as Your Pets Age

Nothing

Your Deductible will continue to increase until it reaches $500 ($250 for Cats).
